THE LOWDOWN

ADRIAN MANNARINO

33-year-old Adrian Mannarino provided one of the shocks of the tournament so far with a straight-sets victory over 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz on Wednesday. The Frenchman took out James Duckworth in five sets on Monday and vastly improved his level against the out-of-sorts Pole for an unlikely run to the third round, with three round of 16 exits at Wimbledon his best Grand Slam showing yet.

ASLAN KARATSEV

World number 15 Aslan Karatsev has been made to work hard for his wins so far with a five-set thriller against Jaume Munar on Monday and a win from a set down to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round. The Russian burst onto the scene here last season by becoming the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open in over 40 years before losing in straight sets to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. 28-year-old Karatsev is now riding a six-match winning streak after winning the Sydney Tennis Classic last week.

THE PREDICTION

World number 15 Aslan Karatsev has a serious chance at going one better and reaching the Australian Open final next Sunday as someone performing at the peak of his powers so far in 2022. However, fatigue has to be considered after some mammoth matches on his way to the Sydney title last week and nine sets already played in Melbourne. World number 69 Adrian Mannarino is far better than his current ranking. The former world number 18 should know to stay patient here over five sets with a chance to snatch at least one likely against the enigmatic Russian. Take Karatsev to navigate a way through once again but adding at least a set for the Frenchman could be valuable here.
