THE PREDICTION

World number 34 Adrian Mannarino has quietly enjoyed one of his best seasons on tour, taking a 32-20 record into the Astana Open with a third ATP title won at the Hall of Fame Open and strong runs in Mallorca, Cincinnati and Miami. The Frenchman won both of his Davis Cup ties two weeks ago but a slight injury stole him from the crucial decider against Great Britain as France just missed out by the tightest of margins. A straight-sets result over compatriot Arthur Rinderknech was a solid start to his promising Astana campaign on Thursday but qualifier Alibek Kachmazov is an unknown quantity here in only his fourth tour-level competition. The 21-year-old will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 276th after winning his first ever match at this level with a straight-sets result over Corentin Moutet on Thursday, backing up a strong qualifying campaign, and that should give him some very useful southpaw practice as he faces a second left-hander on the spin in Mannarino. The Frenchman remains the solid favourite with little in his recent results to suggest a shock is on the cards but take Mannarino to win outright here and leave this intriguing clash out of an accumulator.
