THE PREDICTION

World number six Rafael Nadal is playing doubles for the first time since the inaugural ATP Cup in 2020 and he got a first win of 2022 under his belt alongside Jaume Munar on Tuesday. The 35-year-old will be eager to get as much match practice in after missing the last quarter of the 2021 season through injury and he faces a kind opening fixture in the singles in this first meeting with world number 104 Ricardas Berankis. 31-year-old Berankis beat Marcos Giron on Wednesday in a great result after qualifying well for this warm-up tournament but even a slightly rusty Rafael Nadal should be too steep a hill to climb for the Lithuanian. Nadal’s custom ruthlessness is yet to be seen this season and that makes taking the Spaniard as outright winner a sensible move but he should reasonably be taking this in comfortable straight sets.
