THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Jaume Munar has been superb so far this week in Melbourne with two straight-set victories over Kevin Anderson and Henri Laaksonen. The world number 77 almost broke the top 50 back in 2019 and he certainly has the ability to get closer this season on his performances so far. World number 112 Maxime Cressy, also 24, is up to his career-high ranking but likely to break the top 100 sooner rather than later if his excellent three-set victory over compatriot Reilly Opelka is anything to go by. Cressy proved himself on the big stage at last year’s US Open with a stunning five-set victory over then world number 12 Pablo Carreno Busta and on a hard court he may well have the edge in this first meeting with Munar. Both players seem likely to have a say in this but Cressy’s comeback win over the second seed makes taking him to win at least a set here the tentative call.
