THE PREDICTION

Botic van de Zandschulp enjoyed a superb breakthrough season on tour last year and he is set to break his career-high world ranking of 57th if he can reach the semi-finals here in Melbourne. The 26-year-old is yet to drop a set this week in two impressive victories over Adrian Mannarino and eighth seed Mackenzie McDonald and it has taken serious competition to beat him since a stunning run to the quarter-finals of the US Open last September. Third seed Grigor Dimitrov is such competition but a three-set win over Facundo Bagnis on Thursday is less than totally convincing. The 30-year-old was unplayable until he wasn’t at Indian Wells last October and consistency often the problem with the mercurial Bulgarian. Dimitrov will take some more warming up before the Australian Open and whilst he remains the favourite on ranking it looks a shrewd move to take Van de Zandschulp to win at least a set here.
