THE PREDICTION

In the likelihood that Pablo Carreno Busta has managed to put Spain 1-0 up in this tie against the impressive Kamil Majchrzak, this match looks the most crucial of the three rubbers in this semi-final. World number nine Hubert Hurkacz played the best match of his campaign so far in ousting in-form Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on Thursday and despite a loss against Greece in a dead rubber doubles earlier this week he is world class at the net and therefore an exceptional weapon to have in the doubles. World number 19 Roberto Bautista Agut will likely be aiming to make that doubles decider obsolete with a win over Hurkacz and he looks well capable of doing so having beaten the Pole in both of their previous meetings. The 33-year-old is yet to drop a set this week in three impressive wins over Cristian Garin, Casper Ruud and Dusan Lajovic and this looks like a proper, tight tussle as a result.

Hurkacz lost in three sets to RBA in their previous meeting back in 2020 and the 24-year-old has only improved since. His defeat of Schwartzman, who had just beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas for one of the best results of his career, is certainly the best of both players’ results this campaign and taking him to win at least a set as the likelier of very capable winners seems the wisest move here. A tiebreak seems likely here with so much on the line but it would be a risky addition.
