THE PREDICTION

World number 10 Jannik Sinner picked up the form he left off in 2021 with a commanding display against Australia’s third option Max Purcell, conceding just four games in a straight-sets win. The 20-year-old will be just as potent in this second round robin match of the week as he takes on world number 58 Arthur Rinderknech, who suffered a shock defeat to Roman Safiullin from a set up as France lost to a spirited Russia in their first tie. Italy also suffered a shock defeat to home team Australia but Sinner was not to blame and he will likely require just the two sets again here to get the ATP Cup favourites up and running once again. Rinderknech beat the Italian in their first ever encounter last spring on clay but Sinner returned the favour more recently on his way to the European Open. Sinner in straight-sets seems a reasonable option here.
