THE PREDICTION

World number 51 Jan-Lennard Struff was blown away by Dan Evans in the first match of a tight contest between Germany and Great Britain. The 31-year-old’s game should be a little less rusty in this his fifth career meeting with John Isner but the going looks tough with their head-to-head record at 4-0 to the veteran big-server. 36-year-old Isner was due to face Denis Shapovalov until the eleventh hour but he took little time in dismissing the Canadian’s deputy Brayden Schnur for four games as the USA went on to win the tie 3-0. Isner is the favourite here but it would be a surprise to not see Struff’s level rise. With Alexander Zverev to face a tough time against in-form Taylor Fritz this opening match looks crucial to either nation’s chances of winning Group C. There has been a tiebreak in each of their past four encounters, so taking that option in place of a result seems a useful alternative. However, Isner to win outright is the sensible move.
