Ugo Humbert reached a career-high of 25th in the ATP world rankings last season after a stellar run to a first ATP 500 title at the Halle Open, Roger Federer’s old stomping ground. The 23-year-old is a superb player capable of reaching the very top of the game but he has not played since late September and his level may suffer in this toughest of tough first matches of 2022. World number two Daniil Medvedev will be carrying Team Russia almost solely on his shoulders with Andrey Rublev, Aslan Karatsev and Karen Khachanov all unavailable and as the highest-ranked player at the ATP Cup he will be a tough man to take a set from, never mind beat. Humbert was the winner of their only previous encounter at the Hamburg Open on clay back in 2020 but Medvedev is very likely to win this outright at their current capacities.
