THE PREDICTION

As with the opening fixture between Jan-Lennard Struff and Denis Shapovalov, it is worth holding off on any proposed matches between Germany and Canada until players are confirmed considering the USA can qualify from Group C if they beat Great Britain 3-0 in the earlier tie on Thursday. If world number three Alexander Zverev and number 11 Felix Auger-Aliassime do take to the court it should be another thrilling edition of what is fast-becoming a superb rivalry for this decade of men’s tennis. 24-year-old Zverev won the first three meetings between the two but Auger-Aliassime claimed a stunning five-set victory over the German at Wimbledon last year to reach his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final. Zverev took their head-to-head record to 4-1 with a three-set win on his way to the Vienna Open title late last year but that meant both of their meetings in 2021 required a decider.

At this moment in time Zverev is the most in-form player on tour with just three defeats since Auger-Aliassime bested him at Wimbledon. He is yet to drop a set at the ATP Cup and that makes taking him as the outright winner the sensible choice here, with FAA looking a little shaky in his victory over Cam Norrie on Tuesday and his previous defeat to Taylor Fritz.
