THE PREDICTION

There are so many permutations ahead of this potential doubles decider that make it worth holding off until the players are confirmed and take to court. As discussed in the two singles match previews, Pablo Carreno Busta vs Denis Shapovalov and Roberto Bautista Agut vs Felix Auger-Aliassime, there is a distinct possibility that Team Spain can fight their way to a 2-0 lead in this final that makes this a dead rubber. It would be a surprise but not out of the question to see Canada manage the same but both Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov have impressed this week in steadily improving performances. We shall treat this preview like a doubles decider which should be a must-watch blockbuster between Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov against a pair consisting of Bautista Agut, Carreno Busta, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Albert Ramos-Vinolas or Pedro Martinez.

We cannot be sure of a Spanish pairing because they have blasted through the tournament winning every singles match they take to court for. That does not necessarily mean that RBA and PCB will make a winning doubles partnership and it would be a huge call for Spanish captain Tomos Carbonell to field the lower-ranked Spaniards at his disposal, especially considering the two will have just played the Canadians respectively. All this uncertainty suggests that Team Canada have a huge upper-hand if they can take this tie to a decider. It would be a suiting end to another excellent ATP Cup to see the doubles decide it and in that case take Canada to win outright.
