THE PREDICTION

World number 145 Thanasi Kokkinakis was forced to come back from a set down to fellow Aussie Aleksandar Vukic on Thursday but he reached the semi-finals of a second-successive tournament in his native Adelaide in jubilant scenes. The 25-year-old has suffered more than his fair share of injuries over the last few years but the talent has always been there, not least observed in a five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open last season. Wins this season so far over Frances Tiafoe and John Isner put him at a working level of around top 40 right now but a loss in straight sets to Gael Monfils last week in Adelaide 1 makes this semi-final clash with world number 29 Marin Cilic look a tough ask. 33-year-old Cilic needed three sets to oust in-form Tommy Paul on Thursday but he remains the solid favourite to find a way past Kokkinakis. However, with a boisterous home backing desperate to see their unfortunate star finally get the season he deserves, backing the Aussie to snatch at least one set is perhaps half shrewd half sentimental here.
