THE PREDICTION

World number 30 Marin Cilic is yet to drop a set this week in Adelaide with a comfortable win over Laslo Djere on Friday in keeping with his late-season form last year. The 33-year-old won his second of two more ATP titles last season, bringing his career total to 20, at the St. Petersburg Open in October via a three-set victory over Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 there. Cilic leads their head-to-head record 2-0 after also beating the world number 29 in three at the 2018 Cincinnati Open but their record suggests there should be sets in this for both players. 25-year-old Khachanov has improved round on round in Adelaide with a straight-sets victory over Egor Gerasimov a promising result for his 2022 season after such a poor start to 2021. Given his overall form and record over Khachanov, taking Cilic to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners seems reasonable here.
