THE PREDICTION

Two of the last three women to win Roland-Garros face-off here with 2019 champion Ash Barty warming up for a promising assault on next weekend’s Australian Open and the 2020 champion Iga Swiatek looking refreshed after a tough second-half of last year. World number one Barty came back from a set down to beat Coco Gauff on Wednesday and she doubled-down with a straight-sets victory over 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. The Aussie is also in the final of the Women’s Doubles alongside friend Storm Sanders for a feel good story in Adelaide that will be tough to break down for Swiatek. The world number nine also beat a two-time Australian open in Victoria Azarenka to reach the semi-finals in this high-quality tournament and her dismissal of Leylah Fernandez in the round of 16 was a statement in itself.

Barty was the winner of their only previous meeting in straight sets and on Swiatek’s best surface, clay, at last season’s Madrid Open. At this moment in time the 25-year-old is a level above the supremely strong WTA tour, so take her to win outright here or to win at least a set for a more cautious pick.
