THE PREDICTION

This should be a really entertaining first meeting between world number 21 Gael Monfils and number 29 Karen Khachanov with both players enduring tough spells over the last few seasons. 35-year-old Monfils was playing some of his best tennis just before the covid-19 outbreak shut down the 2020 season with back-to-back titles in Montpellier and Rotterdam in February and March his last success on tour. 25-year-old Khachanov has to go even further back to 2018 for his last of four ATP titles, where he stunned the Paris Masters field to win an ATP 1000 event and break the top 10. Here in Adelaide, top seed Monfils is yet to drop a set in three impressive wins over young players Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Tommy Paul and home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis in the semi-finals. Khachanov claimed the best result of the week, though, with a superb straight-sets victory over in-form Marin Cilic on Saturday.

A final is a thrilling place for a first meeting between two top players but it also brings more questions than answers. The crowd are likely to pull for Monfils’ showmanship and that should see him win at least one of the likely three sets in this clash.
