THE LOWDOWN

World number three Barbora Krejcikova burst into form this time last season with a semi-final exit at the Linz Open but the already-seasoned doubles player really became the player she is today with a stunning run to the Roland-Garros title. The 25-year-old won her first ATP title the tournament before at the Strasbourg Open, also on clay, but a home win on hardcourts at the Prague Open is testament to her ability on all surfaces. Since the US Open there has been no player in better form than Anett Kontaveit, who qualified for the WTA Finals at the very last moment by winning the Transylvania Open and setting a new career-high WTA world ranking at eighth. The 25-year-old has won a total of four titles in an incredible season from the Cleveland Championships, Ostrava Open and Kremlin Cup.

THE PREDICTION

Barbora Krejcikova’s level has understandably dropped off a little in recent months away from her best surface but the Czech is still a danger to anyone at the WTA Finals. Krejcikova will also play Women’s Doubles here as the top seed alongside Katerina Siniakova and that looks to be by far her best opportunity for silverware in Guadalajara. Given the form of Anett Kontaveit in recent months it would not be a huge surprise to see the Estonian romp to victory on Sunday as a debut WTA Finals champion, let alone start with a solid victory here. Given we do not know how good Krejcikova is feeling after a long break on tour, taking Kontaveit to win outright in this first meeting seems a suitably cautious pick.
