THE PREDICTION

Including her qualifying matches played en-route to a stunning German Open win two weeks ago, 22-year-old Ludmilla Samsonova is on a nine-match winning streak after battling past Jessica Pegula on Wednesday. The 22-year-old Russian is one of many players on the WTA this season to burst onto the scene from relative obscurity and she will take some stopping here on her Wimbledon debut. In her way is former US Open champion Sloane Stephens who shocked the 10th seed Petra Kvitova in the first round and backed that up with a straight-sets victory over Kristie Ahn in the second round. Stephens is a well-loved player who will gather more and more hype with every passing round as she aims to beat her best record here so far of a quarter-final exit in 2013.

Samsonova was the winner the last time she faced Sloane Stephens in a three-set match at the Brisbane International in 2020. However, we have not seen this version of Stephens for some time and the excitement around her returning form is likely to get a strong, supportive crowd around her. Samsonova is still the form player on grass coming into this likely tough, lengthy match but take Stephens to win at least a set here as the favourite to come through.
