THE PREDICTION
World number eight Roger Federer was in deep trouble against Adrian Mannarino on Centre Court on Tuesday before the Frenchman was forced to retire through injury. As the debate over the slippery nature of this year’s courts rolls on, the eight-time Wimbledon champion can count himself fortunate as he prepares to face an old foe for a 21st time. World number 56 Richard Gasquet overcame another veteran on Tuesday in Japan’s Yuichi Sugita over four sets and the Frenchman will be keen to emulate his compatriot’s efforts. Mannarino was in control against Federer in large part by breaking any chance of rhythm for the 20-time Grand Slam champion and Gasquet will do well to follow in his footsteps.
However, Gasquet’s record against Federer is fairly abysmal. The Swiss leads Gasquet 18-2 and has won each of the last 10 matches without dropping a set since Gasquet’s second win back in 2011. That decade-long hold over Gasquet, with whom Federer was often spoken of in the same bracket early in their careers, looks more about mentality these days than anything the Frenchman can muster on the court. With little practice on the grass so far, Federer to win outright is the safest option here. The 39-year-old should, though, be able to come through Gasquet in straight sets for the 11th time in a row.
