THE PREDICTION

World number nine Matteo Berrettini was challenged throughout his first round match by Guido Pella on Wednesday morning but he eventually beat the Argentine inf four entertaining sets. The 25-year-old is riding a six-match winning streak after winning the Queen’s Club Championships on his debut as his powerful game has taken well again to grass after initially impressing at Wimbledon in 2019. Berrettini will face an interesting new, particularly long name on the scene in fellow 25-year-old Botic Van de Zandschulp after the Dutchman made the main draw here as a lucky loser. World number 139 Van de Zandschulp claimed a first top 20 win over Hubert Hurkacz at Roland-Garros in one of two five-set marathons there. He was impressive even in defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round and looks to be coming into real form this season.

Van de Zandschulp clearly has the grit to go all the way and after Pella’s excellent attempt at derailing Matteo Berrettini’s route to the final it is clear that the Italian’s serve is not perfect. The Dutchman is well capable at battling his way to a set in this first meeting, particularly whilst Berrettini grows into the tournament, so take the Italian to win outright here.
