THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Karolina Pliskova had come into Wimbledon with little form to speak of but the Czech star looks to be enjoying her tennis again with three-successive straight sets victories. Three wins over in-form opponents in Tamara Zidansek, Donna Vekic and Tereza Martincova makes 29-year-old Pliskova a sudden contender for a first Grand Slam title here and with so many other seeds dropping out of the draw. Pliskova has never made it past the round of 16 at SW19 but she made the 2016 US Open final and has been a serial contender over the years anywhere she goes. In her way is one of the form outsiders coming into Wimbledon in 22-year-old Samsonova, who blasted Sloane Stephens off the court in the third set of an enthralling battle. The Russian won her first WTA title last time out at the German Open and also too out the 22nd seed Jessica Pegula this week.

This is a very interesting first meeting between Pliskova and Samsonova as the younger player continues to storm through the draw. Samsonova is riding a 10-match winning streak if you include her German Open qualifying matches and that looked to be the difference against Stephens on Friday. Pliskova is a seasoned champion but she can sometimes be lacking in intensity which cannot be said for Samsonova’s current displays. For this reason, take Samsonova to win at least a set in this tough result to call.
