THE PREDICTION
World number two passed an important test on grass by beating specialist Marin Cilic, though the Russian had to dig deep to come back from two sets down on Saturday. In a blockbuster third round encounter, a reinvigorated Cilic looked like claiming his biggest win in years before Medvedev upped his level against the 2017 finalist and that is a huge statement to the rest of the last 16. However, 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz has quietly plugged away to record three-straight victories without dropping a set against tough opponents in Lorenzo Musetti, Marcos Giron and Alexander Bublik. The Pole has clearly put the huge dip in form he suffered after winning the Miami Masters behind him now and that makes him a suddenly dangerous new variable to contend with at SW19.
This is a fabulous stage for a first meeting between two very different players with two very powerful forehands. 24-year-old Hurkacz is an altogether quieter character than Medvedev and if the Pole plays well enough that could endear him to the crowds who currently have a strange love/hate relationship with the Russian. 25-year-old Medvedev is the solid favourite to come through this challenge but Hurkacz is still a relatively unknown quality at this level and he is well capable of springing the upset. Therefore, take Medvedev to win outright here in a match that could easily see four sets.
