THE LOWDOWN

WANG XINYU

19-year-old Chinese prospect Wang Xinyu powered through the Wimbledon qulaifiers without dropping a set to make her Wimbledon debut on Monday. The world number 144 has a fairly healthy 14-16 record for 2021 although she has spent most of her time on the ITF circuit. The teenager looks set for a bright career very much on the WTA tour, though, but she has yet to win a first round match at a Grand Slam having lost at the Australian Open in 2018 and the US Open in 2019.

SOFIA KENIN

World number six Sofia Kenin has struggled for consistent form this season but she will be targeting the quarter-finals or above here at least. Kenin achieved a career-high fourth in the WTA world rankings last year after winning the Australian Open and going on to finish runner-up at Roland-Garros to Iga Swiatek. The 22-year-old has so far struggled to make an impact on grass and has never made it past the second round here.

THE PREDICTION

This looks like by far Wang Xinyu’s biggest match so far in her young career and world number six Sofia Kenin needs to start strongly against the teenager to avoid a potential banana skin. 22-year-old Kenin has possibly struggled to cope with her sudden stardom after her Australian Open title in 2020 but the pandemic could also be a factor for a difficult year since for the American. There is enough promise in Wang Xinyu’s recent performances to suggest that this could be a difficult first hurdle for Kenin, whose sudden onslaught on the top of the sport came well after Wimbledon 2019 so she has a low benchmark to meet here. The Chinese teenager should garner a fair amount of the support here and she already seems like a fearless one to watch. Take Kenin to win outright here with thus well capable of seeing three sets.
