THE LOWDOWN
NICK KYRGIOS
World number 61 Nick Kyrgios will play just his third tournament of the season at Wimbledon after deciding to stay off the tour throughout most of the pandemic. Kyrgios has still managed to play in some of the best matches of the year, most notably beating Ugo Humbert in five sets before losing to Dominic Thiem via the same score at the Australian Open. The 26-year-old reached a career-high 13th in the ATP world rankings in 2016 when he won three of his six ATP titles. Kyrgios has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam twice so far, at Wimbledon in 2014 and the Australian Open in 2015.
UGO HUMBERT
Ugo Humbert moved up to a career-high 25th in the ATP world rankings after winning the second title of his career at the Halle Open last weekend. Since then, Humbert pulled out of the round of 16 in Mallorca to protect his body ahead of a really enticing prospect at Wimbledon. 22-year-old Humbert first truly impressed at Wimbledon in 2019 when he bested teenage sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round. The Frenchman lost to Novak Djokovic in the subsequent round of 16 in 2019 which remains his best Grand Slam showing so far.
THE PREDICTION
This looks set to be the must-watch match of the first round at Wimbledon between world number 61 Nick Kyrgios and number 25 Ugo Humbert. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after Kyrgios retired from their first encounter at the Mexican Open last year but he gained famous revenge in Melbourne. Kyrgios’ thrilling five-set match on his favourite court at the Australian Open may well have contributed to Humbert’s subsequent poor form but the Frenchman is back near his best now. On grass and current form, Humbert is probably the favourite to come through this test but it remains to be seen how much that Australian Open loss will affect him on the day. Take this match to see at least one tiebreak, as many of each players’ matches tend to do, and leave the winner up to chance in this blockbuster.
