THE LOWDOWN
JAN-LENNARD STRUFF
Jan-Lennard Struff has enjoyed a decent campaign to date and he came agonisingly close to earning a maiden ATP Tour title at the Munich Open back in May. He was beaten by Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final of that event and he will believe he is not too far away from a success if he can maintain his form. He also produced a solid showing at Roland-Garros having seen off Andrey Rublev in their first-round encounter before winning two further matches. With back-to-back appearances in the third round of Wimbledon, the German will be confident of at least matching those efforts.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number two Daniil Medvedev comes into Wimbledon off the back of a first title win on grass from the Mallorca Championships. The Russian beat grass specialist Sam Querrey in straight sets as well as top 20 opponents Casper Ruud and Pablo Carreno Busta along the way for some excellent preparation. The 25-year-old also won the ATP Cup earlier this year in Melbourne as part of Team Russia alongside Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev. Medvedev now has 11 ATP titles to his name, including the 2020 ATP Finals, all on his favoured hard surface. The Russian’s best showing at Wimbledon was a third round five-set defeat to David Goffin back in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Jan-Lenard Struff will be relishing the opportunity to face world number two Daniil Medvedev here just two weeks after he beat the Russian at the Halle Open. Struff has been in excellent form this season and looks to be transitioning well from clay to the grass as a robust and ready player on any surface. That win over Medvedev made it 3-1 to the Russian in their head-to-head record, though, and Medvedev’s win at Mallorca last week saw him much more comfortable than at Halle. Take Medvedev to win outright with Struff more than capable of taking this to four or even five.
