THE LOWDOWN
CASPER RUUD
World number 14 Casper Ruud was knocked out of the Mallorca Championships quarter-finals by top seed Daniil Medvedev last week. Ruud shot up the ATP world rankings this clay season after some excellent performances across the swing. The Norwegian won the Geneva Open ahead of Roland-Garros, where a third-round exit broke a six-match streak of reaching at least the quarter-finals at tournaments played. 22-year-old Ruud is certainly best on his favoured clay surface but he his best Grand Slam showing so far came in a round of 16 exit at this year’s Australian Open.
JORDAN THOMPSON
World number 76 Jordan Thompson has enjoyed a solid grass court season with two round of 16 exits at the Stuttgart Open and Halle Open bettered by a quarter-finals exit in Mallorca last week. The Aussie is a tough all-court player who prides himself on his work rate and that makes him a dangerous opponent to draw in a five set format. The 27-year-old’s best showing at a Grand Slam is a round of 16 exit at the US Open last year but he has been part of some four and five-set slogs in recent years.
THE PREDICTION
World number 14 Casper Ruud would be well inside the top 10 on a clay-court only ATP world rankings board but the Norwegian is a top 20 player by right across all surfaces. The 22-year-old has plenty of potential but so far has just two ATP titles on his favoured clay and he is ready to better his Grand Slam record. Ruud leads a head-to-head with Jordan Thompson 2-0 and both of those matches have cone in the first rounds of Grand Slams. The pair shared a five-set slog at Roland-Garros in 2018 but Ruud was much more composed in a straight-sets win at the Australian Open this season. With the potential for this match able to come anywhere between those results, take the Norwegian to win outright here in what will be an enjoyable match on Tuesday.
