THE PREDICTION

This semi-final between world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas and number five Alexander Zverev is the ninth instalment of a rivalry set to be a staple of this decade in the Men’s game. It would not be a surprise if this were one of the semi-finals at next month’s US Open, where both players have a huge opportunity to win their first Grand Slam title after both recently finishing runner-up in one after taking the first two sets. 24-year-old Zverev was two sets up at last year’s US Open before a capitulation of the most gut-wrenching kind saw Dominic Thiem storm to victory but that experience has changed the German. He has since been wholly more focused, culminating in two titles won this year at the Mexican Open, the Madrid Masters and, perhaps most importantly for him, a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Tsitsipas’ scar is much more recent and he has clearly taken some time to recover from his loss in the Roland-Garros final to Novak Djokovic back in June. However, the 23-year-old will also become even better for it and whilst his campaign this week in Cincinnati has seen two sets dropped to Lorenzo Sonego and Felix Auger-Aliassime he has still been very impressive. He leads this head-to-head strongly 6-2 after beating Zverev in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros over five gruelling sets, something that perhaps contributed to his eventual loss in the final. However, Zverev has also won a meeting this year with a straight-sets victory to lift his Mexican Open title back in April. The German is yet to drop a set this week in three powerful performances. With the fast conditions probably suiting him more than Tsitsipas, take Zverev to win at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners. This could be the best match of the tournament.
