THE PREDICTION
World number 105 Andy Murray won his first match back on tour since his third round defeat to Denis Shapovalov at Wimbledon last month by beating Richard Gasquet in straight sets. The 34-year-old has not lost to anybody ranked outside the top 12 in the world, with Shapovalov the 10th seed at Wimbledon, since his first match back from a long injury lay-off at the Montpellier Open back in February and each passing week with no major injury concerns is a positive on the former world number one’s return to form. Murray has won the Cincinnati Masters on two previous occasions in 2008 and 2011, beating Novak Djokovic in both finals. The 14-time ATP 1000 title winner will face world number 13 Hubert Hurkacz next, who won his very first Masters title earlier this year at the Miami Open.
24-year-old Hurkacz beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets on Tuesday in a match delayed by the poor weather in Cincinnati right now. The Pole beat Roger Federer on his way to the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month but he has struggled this season to string some incredible tournament campaigns together into a longer run of form. He will almost certainly get better with age and has an excellent chance at reaching the ATP Finals this season if he finds a few more of his best weeks on tour but this is a head-scratcher of a first meeting. The likelihood of this seeing three sets is fairly promising but as the higher-ranked player in the better form take Hurkacz to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
