THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Karen Khachanov has designs on returning to the top 10 next season and he has shown flashes of that level this season, most notably on his way to a Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The 25-year-old beat John Millman in two tight sets on Friday to set-up this all-Russian clash with 29-year-old Aslan Karatsev, who has been untroubled so far by Egor Gerasimov and Gilles Simon. Khachanov may feel there is something symbolic in this semi-final in Moscow against the man who usurped him as the Russian number three earlier this year, where Karatsev burst onto the scene by reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Second seed Karatsev has lost both of his previous meetings with third seed Khachanov, including this year at the Canadian Open, but this third clash should come much closer. Taking this to see three sets could be one option but otherwise Khachanov to win at least a set in what looks like a long match seems the most reasonable pick.
