THE PREDICTION

World number 37 Ekaterina Alexandrova provided the shock of the tournament on Friday when she beat top seed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. Whilst world number two was admittedly in her first tournament since contracting covid-19, Alexandrova’s best result of the season should not be underestimated in front of a home crowd and she will be dangerous here. World number seven Maria Sakkari was not to be outdone, though, with a huge straight-sets victory over Simona Halep. The Greek is chasing the WTA Tour Finals well and she looks destined for a rematch with Anett Kontaveit after losing to the Estonian at the Ostrava Open. Sakkari has never lost to Alexandrova, with a healthy 3-0 lead in their head-to-head record, and she is unlikely to now. Her record at this stage of tournaments has been found wanting this season, though, with agonising exits in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros and the US Open but taking her to win outright here seems the sensible way to go.
