THE PREDICTION

36-year-old Gilles Simon is enjoying a strong week of form at the European Open with two impressive victories over the eighth seed Laslo Djere and Mackenzie McDonald. The veteran former world number six had won just three matches on a difficult tour this season but he will be buoyed and ready to attempt a huge upset in this first meeting with world number 22 Aslan Karatsev. The second seed is one of two Russians left in the Kremlin Cup draw after beating Egor Gerasimov handily on Thursday. Karatsev won his first ATP title this season at the Dubai Open and he finished runner-up to Matteo Berrettini at the Serbia Open too, although it will take some doing for him to best his run to the Australian Open semi-finals as a qualifier at the start of the season. Simon in this mood is an unknown quantity but taking Karatsev to win outright remains the most reasonable outcome.
