THE LOWDOWN

15th seed Elise Mertens cruised past her second round opponent Valentini Grammatikopoulou on Wednesday, conceding just four games to the Greek. The Belgian number one will have her hands full at the US Open as she plays in the Women’s Doubles as top seeds alongside Su-Wei Hsieh, with whom she won the Wimbledon title in July. Not to be outdone, 20th seed Ons Jabeur conceded just the one game in her second round match with a total domination of Maria Camila Osorio Serrano. The Tunisian also enjoyed a great Wimbledon campaign, reaching the quarter-finals and wining fans to her cause with each exciting performance.

THE PREDICTION

Elise Mertens is the higher seed here but on current Singles form she will likely be up against it in a first meeting with world number 21 Ons Jabeur. The 26-year-old has beaten Garbine Muguruza, Bianca Andreescu and twice Iga Swiatek since July with some stunning, crowd-friendly performances. 25-year-old Mertens is no pushover but recent results point heavily towards Jabeur finding a way to the round of 16 here. Take the Tunisian as outright winner, with three sets a possibility.
