THE LOWDOWN
25-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp claimed the biggest win of his career after coming back from a set down against the eighth seed Casper Ruud to win in four sets on Wednesday. The Dutchman has performed admirably at Grand Slams this season but went one better than his second round exit at Roland-Garros, where he beat Hubert Hurkacz in five sets and then lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in five. World number 80 Facundo Bagnis has led a charmed life in the draw so far but the 31-year-old still had to beat the players in front of him and has done so confidently. A straight-sets win over Taro Daniel in the first round was backed-up well by beating compatriot Marco Trungelliti in four on Wednesday.
THE PREDICTION
Both Botic van de Zandschulp and Facundo Bagnis are playing the biggest match of their careers here on Friday with a first ever place in the round of 16 at a Grand Slam on the line. The draw has been very kind to Bagnis, who is yet to face a player inside the top 100 at Flushing Meadows, but Van de Zandschulp will be challenging him at world number 80 soon on his current form. The current world number 117 is a big-game player who gets better the longer a match takes, which should help him through here against Bagnis with the Argentine better-suited to clay. Set-wise this could be three, four or five but Botic van de Zandschulp is clearly in the form of his life and he should see the last 16.
