THE LOWDOWN
World number one Novak Djokovic again had to play against the wishes of most of the crowd as he faced another young underdog in the first round of a Grand Slam. Like his match against Jack Draper at Wimbledon in July, the Serb did not have it all his own way in a four-set win over teenage Holger Rune late on Tuesday evening. The 34-year-old is chasing a second ‘calendar slam’ after winning the Australian Open, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon this season. 25-year-old Tallon Griekspoor faces the biggest match of his career here in facing the world number one. The Dutchman beat Jan-Lennard Struff in five sets on Tuesday, showing great resilience after going down twice in that match.
THE PREDICTION
Like Wimbledon, and increasingly more often across the tour, Novak Djokovic struggled at times to assert himself in the opening round with a four-set victory over Danish prospect Holger Rune. The Serb should be the better for it over the next few rounds and that spells trouble for Tallon Griekspoor, whose five-set win over Struff was very impressive but this is a totally different situation. The world number 121 was outclassed by Alexander Zverev in three sets at Wimbledon in July and that match is the better litmus test for this. Take Djokovic to win in straight sets.
