THE LOWDOWN
36-year-old Kaia Kanepi overcame the 31st
seed Yulia Putintseva from a set down to reach the second round of the US Open. The Estonian reached a career-high 15th in the WTA world rankings nine years ago and won her last of four WTA titles in 2013, although she made a stunning run to finish runner-up to Elise Mertens at this year’s Gippsland Trophy. At the other end of a tennis career is 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez, who won her first WTA title earlier this year at the Monterrey Open and is tipped for a very bright future. The Canadian beat Ana Konjuh in straight sets on Monday to reach the second round of the US Open for a second successive year.
THE PREDICTION
Both Kaia Kanepi and Leylah Fernandez won well in their respective first round matches and this first meeting between the two should be highly competitive as a result. Estonian veteran Kanepi was a quarter-finalist here twice, most recently in 2017, and that experience could count for something. Still, a result seems difficult to side with here and this match is probably best left alone.
