THE LOWDOWN
World number 11 Casper Ruud’s job was made much simpler in the first round of the US Open as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled out to be replaced by lucky loser Yuichi Sugita. The eighth seed beat Sugita in straight sets to get what could be a really promising US Open campaign underway after winning four ATP titles this season alone on his favoured clay surface. World number 117 Botic van de Zandschulp once again proved his effectivity in the longer format of the sport by coming back from two sets down to beat Carlos Taberner in the first round of the US Open. The Dutchman beat Hubert Hurkacz in five sets at Roland-Garros back in July before losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round – also in five.
THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp clearly has an excellent fighting spirit in him best suited to the five-set format of the sport, much like Mackenzie McDonald in as much as he spends most of the rest of the season on the Challenger circuit. The Dutchman has a creditable chance at pulling off another huge win here against clay specialist Casper Ruud here, although the Norwegian is in much better form than Hubert Hurkacz was in Paris back in June. Ruud should be winning this in three sets n his superior level but Van de Zandschulp has prove himself enough to suggest this could see four or five quit easily. Take Ruud to win outright for this reason.
