THE LOWDOWN

World number eight Iga Swiatek has dropped sets in each of her last two rounds at the US Open in tough wins over Fiona Ferro and Anett Kontaveit. The Pole won Roland-Garros last season in a teenage blaze of glory much like what we are seeing from Leylah Fernandez, Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz this fortnight, although Swiatek did not drop a set at all in that most blistering of campaigns. 24-year-old Belinda Bencic is yet to drop a set herself and she was excellent in her first real test on Saturday with a straight-sets win over the 23rd seed Jessica Pegula. The world number 12 recently won Gold in the Women’s Singles and Silver in the Women’s Doubles events at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

THE PREDICTION

Swiatek won the first of her two WTA tour titles this season with a convincing straight-sets victory over Bencic in the final of the Adelaide International. This second meeting should be much closer with Bencic’s brilliant return to form this summer combining well with a slight downturn in Swiatek’s level since the end of the clay season. It is hard to side against the 20-year-old for all her bravado and power on court but Bencic is one of the form players on tour right now and the Swiss seems the likelier to scrape through here.
