THE LOWDOWN
World number five Elina Svitolina is proving to be something of a dark horse at the US Open having gone four rounds without dropping a set, yet somehow out of the spotlight. The 26-year-old is riding a nine-match winning streak from taking the Chicago Women’s Open title last week but her defeat of 12th seed Simona Halep on Sunday was a first real statement of intent in New York. Svitolina is one win away from matching her best Grand Slam finish after reaching the semi-finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2019. One of the players taking some of that spotlight off Svitolina’s run is teenager Leylah Fernandez, who beat reigning champion Naomi Osaka from a set down in the third round and backed that up with a similar result against 2016 champion Angelique Kerber. The Canadian won her first WTA tour title at the Monterrey Open earlier this year.
THE PREDICTION
Having taken out two US Open champions already, Leylah Fernandez turns 19 today in what is proving to be the breakthrough campaign of a very promising career. In terms of current form, the defeat of Angelique Kerber from a set down was all the more impressive than beating an out-of-sorts Naomi Osaka on Friday and she will be backed to the hilt in this huge test against in-form Elina Svitolina. 26-year-old Svitolina will have to cope with playing the villain here, with her journey to the quarter-finals going well under the radar in New York. The pair met in the quarter-finals of last season’s Monterrey Open where Svitolina won in two tight sets on her way to the title – a title that Fernandez picked up this season. World number five Svitolina should not be underestimated here but the crowd should do their part in helping teenage sensation Leylah Fernandez through to the semi-finals.
