THE LOWDOWN

MARTINA TREVISAN

Martina Trevisan comes into this tournament ranked 105th in the world as of August 2021. The 27 year-old Italian reached the quarter-finals of the French Open in 2020 but has yet to make any imprint upon a Grand Slam tournament since then. She hasn’t got past the first round in any of the other four events she has played in.

COCO VANDEWEGHE

Qualification as a wild card entry means that Coco Vandeweghe has the opportunity to try and regain some form at a major event. In January 2018, the American 29 year-old was ranked ninth in the world but she is now 290th. Her best performance at the US Open was a semi-final appearance in 2017 and she has played in the quarters of Wimbledon twice and the final four at the Australian Open on one occasion, as well. However, due to several injuries, since that performance in 2017 at Flushing Meadows, she has won just two matches at a major tournament from a possible seven.

THE PREDICTION

These two have never met so a head-to-head record cannot influence a prediction for this. Trevisan is winless in her last three matches whilst Vandeweghe hasn’t won since the first round of Wimbledon against Olga Govorotsova. Vandeweghe is on home turf so will be comfortable in her surroundings and she should come in as the slight favourite. However, it is likely that this match will go to three sets.
