THE LOWDOWN
MARCOS GIRON
Marcos Giron turned pro in 2014 and is now enjoying one of the most successful spells in his career. His highest ever ranking of 64 in July 2021 was followed by dropping a place to 65 a few weeks later but that is where he remains. That has followed a third round appearance at the French Open as well as a second round showing at Wimbledon. Giron also made it through the first round of the Olympic games in Tokyo.
ANTOINE HOANG
Coming through the US Open qualifiers allowed Antoine Hoang to make his fifth Grand Slam already in his short Tennis career. Hoang reached the third round at the French Open in 2019 and his best performance at the US Open came in 2019. Hoang reached a home final in the ATP World Tour 250 series in 2019 as he lost the Open Sud de France doubles alongside Benjamin Bonzi.
THE PREDICTION
Giron is the heavy favourite for this match given the inexperience of Hoang as well as the fact he had to come through a tough qualification for this event. They have only ever met once before and that was in qualification for Wimbledon in 2019. Giron won that match but this is the first time they have played on a hard court. Regardless of the differences in the surface, the outcome is likely to remain the same with Giron the relatively heavy favourite.
