THE LOWDOWN

KAROLINA MUCHOVA

World number 24 Karolina Muchova brings a pretty impressive 19-8 record into the US Open after performing well at Grand Slams this season. The 25-year-old beat Ash Barty at the Australian Open in the quarter-finals to cause the big tournament upset there and she matched that with a run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for a second time.

SARA SORRIBES TORMO

World number 41 Sara Sorribes Tormo claimed her first ever WTA tour title earlier this year with a great campaign at the Guadalajara Open. The 24-year-old has been consistently excellent in 2021 and reached the semi-finals of the Cleveland Championships last week after a quarter-final exit at the Canadian open earlier this month.

THE PREDICTION

Sorribes Tormo and Muchova have never met at tour level but the Spaniard won an ITF title over Muchova way back in 2016 on clay. That result bares no thinking about here on hard, where Muchova is more effective, and five years on, especially as Sorribes Tormo’s form has only recently really exploded. This could be one of the best matches on Tuesday evening at Flushing Meadows between two players keen to take it to the other. Current form would favour the Spaniard but Muchova is very good in these conditions so take the Czech to win at least a set.
