THE LOWDOWN
ELINA SVITOLINA
Elina Svitolina won Bronze at the Tokyo Olympic Games after an encouraging week of great form and after some wobbled at the Masters events this month she won her 16th WTA title, defeating Alize Cornet on Saturday at the Chicago Women’s Open. The 26-year-old has won 16 WTA titles overall now and still has plenty of time for more left, although she is still some way off her best potential like her WTA Finals-winning season in 2018. The Ukrainian has reached at least the quarter-final stage of all four Grand Slams and in 2019 she made the semi-finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open.
REBECCA MARINO
30-year-old Rebecca Marino spends much of her season on the ITF circuit but the Canadian made full use of a wildcard to the Canadian Open earlier this month to reach the round of 16 via two impressive wins over Madison Keys and Paula Badosa. Marino beat two qualifying seeds to reach the main draw of the US Open for the first time since 2011. She has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
Elina Svitolina’s title-winning campaign in Chicago this week completely changes her prospects at the US Open. Form coming into major tournaments currently carries so much weight on the WTA tour that a title-winner the week before has to be considered a favourite. Barbora Krejcikova’s emergence from obscurity to win the Strasbourg Open and then Roland-Garros is just one example of players making the most of momentum on the WTA tour. Rebecca Marino has been able to upset a few players recently, though, and Svitolina is unlikely to be as vulnerable to a poor performance in any future rounds if she can get past this potential banana skin. Take the Swede to win in straight sets, but cautiously.
