THE LOWDOWN

BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP

A tricky and competitive qualifying tournament for Botic van de Zandschulp saw the Dutchman come through three three-set victories in order to reach an impressive clean sweep of Grand Slam appearances. In 2021, he has reached all four majors, getting through to the second round in both the French Open and Wimbledon. He also broke into the top 150 and his August 2021 ranking of 118 is a career best.

CARLOS TABERNER

Carlos Taberner replaced the reigning champion Dominic Thiem following Thiem’s withdrawal due to a right wrist injury. Taberner’s Grand Slam record is quite average if a little poor. The Spaniard turned pro in 2017 and this is only his third major. Two first round exits at the French Open is his record thus far in his career.

THE PREDICTION

Despite only just breaking onto the professional tennis scene, Botic van de Zandschulp has been excellent. It is rare for someone in his first ever US Open to be the favourite for his first round tie but that is the case in this instance. Carlos Taberner is slightly more experienced in terms of years played but he wouldn’t be in the tournament if it wasn’t for Thiem’s injury. Botic van de Zandschulp comes into this as the slight favourite.
