THE LOWDOWN

ANDY MURRAY

Andy Murray won his first of three total Grand Slam titles in 2012, beating Novak Djokovic in five incredible sets. The 34-year-old has struggled to string enough tournaments together this year to bring himself back into the top 50 but his loss to Frances Tiafoe last week at the Winston-Salem Open was his first to a player outside of the top 13 since February. Murray has won 46 ATP titles so far, adding Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 to his US Open title as well as the Davis Cup in 2015, the ATP Finals in 2016 and three Olympic Gold Medals across Singles and Doubles. He is eight Grand Slam wins from reaching 200 victories at major tournaments and would become the ninth man ever to do so.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas will be an interesting man to watch at the US Open this year after a downturn in form since finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros. The 23-year-old has lost in the semi-finals of his last two tournaments to Reilly Opelka and Alexander Zverev at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, respectively. However, he remains the player with the most wins on tour this season with a 48-14 record and two titles at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Lyon Open. Tsitsipas has plenty to prove having not made it past the third round at the US Open.

THE PREDICTION

This is clearly the pick of the first round ties in the Men’s Singles draw of the US Open and a wonderful stage for the first ever meeting between former world number one Andy Murray and current world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas. 34-year-old Murray has not beaten a player inside the top 10 since this time last year, when he upset then world number seven Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open. It would not be an understatement to say that beating Tsitsipas would be his best individual result since winning the 2016 ATP Finals, where he beat Novak Djokovic in the final. For that reason, 23-year-old Tsitsipas has to be favoured to progress here even though he has stuttered in recent tournaments and has yet to make a real dent on the US Open. The Greek lost in the first round of Wimbledon in a match that saw the crowd vying for his underdog opponent Frances Tiafoe and he will have to better cope with that here against a former US Open champion but take Tsitsipas to win outright, with at least one tiebreak likely.
