THE PREDICTION

Transylvania Open top seed Simona Halep has looked in solid form so far this week with two comfortable victories over Elena Ruse and Varvara Gracheva. The world number 18 has spent much of the 2021 season battling injuries but with the WTA Finals too far to grasp for now she can focus on enjoying the remainder of the campaign ahead of a big push in 2022. World number 105 Jaqueline Cristian has been in fine form in recent weeks, reaching the Astana Open semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Alison Van Uytvanck there. The 23-year-old Romanian secured one of the biggest wins of her career by beating the fifth seed Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets on Wednesday and she was exceptional in coming back to beat Kaja Juvan with two tight tiebreaks on Tuesday. This should fall fairly comfortably for Simona Halep but taking her to win outright seems wise considering Cristian’s performances.
