THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Simona Halep and number 14 Anett Kontaveit have met in the Transylvania Open final as the top and second seeds, respectively, after perfect campaigns in which neither have dropped a set. 30-year-old Halep conceded just the one game to Marta Kostyuk on Saturday in a blistering statement of intent but 25-year-old Kontaveit is the player in better overall form. Kontaveit is close to breaking the top 10 for a first time after winning three WTA tournaments since August and desperately seeking a much-deserved debut at the year-end WTA Finals next week.

Kontaveit will have to beat Simona Halep for the first time in her career if she is to win a fourth WTA title this season. The red-hot Estonian has never taken a set from the Romanian, with Halep leading their head-to-head record 3-0 across two Masters matches in Miami and Rome in 2017 and the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2019. The home favourite is certainly the underdog on form here in Cluj, though, and taking Kontaveit to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable champions seems a suitably cautious way to go here.
