THE PREDICTION

World number one Ashleigh Barty has had to dig deep over her last two matches here in Stuttgart, fighting back from a set down twice against Karolina Pliskova and then Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals to reach her third final of the season. The Aussie is 2/2 for finals this year with wins at the Yara Valley Classic event in Melbourne and the Miami Open earlier this month and she will be favourite here in facing Aryna Sabalenka for a second time this month. The world number seven was exceptional in blasting Simona Halep off the court in her semi-final on Saturday and has every chance of winning this one on momentum alone but Barty’s experience and solid-cold nerve should serve her well here. The pair share a finely poised 3-3 head-to-head record ahead of this seventh meeting but their three-set clash in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open earlier this month looks a good benchmark for the result. Barty has had to win her last two matches against top 10 players Pliskova and Svitolina in three and Sabalenka can force a decider here to see the world number one take it in three again.
