THE LOWDOWN
Defending Paris Masters champion Daniil Medvedev was able to overcome a gutsy performance by Hugo Gaston with the Frenchman backed raucously by a partisan crowd. The 25-year-old is one of the best on tour at playing the villain when he needs to but he will be expecting more support here on in like he eventually received on his way to becoming a Grand Slam champion for the first time at the US Open. Medvedev has a superb record at hardcourt Masters events since Autumn 2019, when he truly became the finished article we see today, winning four and finishing runner-up in one of the 10 in which he has played. 24-year-old Alexander Zverev has one more Maters title than Medvedev, though, after winning two more this season in Madrid and Cincinnati. The German also won a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and two more hardcourt titles from the Mexican Open and last week’s Vienna Open. The world number four exerted dominance over ATP Finals qualifier Casper Ruud on Friday in impressive straight sets.
THE PREDICTION
Aside from the obvious feats of world number one Novak Djokovic, who won the first three Grand Slams this season, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have been the form players this year on tour. It would not be a surprise for this match-up to be the ATP Finals final later this month on indoor conditions in Turin like the ones they are excelling on here in Paris, with the two facing off last season for the Paris Masters title. Medvedev made it three wins in a row over Zverev in the semi-finals of the ATP Cup back in February of this year and he has won four of the last five meetings since his emergence as a world-beater in Autumn 2019. Zverev still leads this head-to-head 5-4 after winning their first four meetings from 2016 to 2018 but the Russian looks capable of levelling things here in what is already becoming a rivalry for the decade. Medvedev won in three sets in the final here last season and he can win outright here to set-up a potential rematch with Novak Djokovic.
