THE PREDICTION
World number six Andrey Rublev has really struggled to make a proper impact on a tournament since his loss to Alexander Zverev in the Cincinnati Masters final back in August. Defeats to the likes of Tommy Paul, Adrian Mannarino and Botic van de Zandschulp in his last three tournaments is poor form by his standards and he has only managed to add one ATP title to his total of eight this year from the Rotterdam Open back in March. 24-year-old Taylor Fritz came back from a set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego on Tuesday in keeping with his rampant return to form. The current world number 26 can set a new career-high this week in Paris if he reaches the quarter-finals and he has done so in each of his last two tournaments with an excellent run to the Indian Wells semi-finals and last week’s St. Petersburg Open final.
Fritz was the winner of their first meeting back in 2018 at Indian Wells but Rublev really pushed on in the resulting seasons to win their next two for a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head record. The Russian won in comfortable straight sets earlier this season in the round of 16 at the Dubai Open but with his level some way below that day and Fritz’ so much higher this looks like needing a decider. On form Taylor Fritz looks like the player capable of an upset here, so take him to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
