THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Marcos Giron played out a thrilling three-set match with fellow American Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday night, coming back from a set down to beat the in-form fans favourite. Giron will set a new career-high no matter the outcome of this second round match having entered the tournament on his best of 57th and he enjoyed one of the best runs of his career here last season with a round of 16 exit to Milos Raonic. World number 15 Diego Schwartzman was in a similar battle with John Millman earlier on Tuesday, eventually coming through in three sets and almost three hours on court. A smashed racket saw him treated for splinters but the in-form Argentine is clearly feeling capable of something special this week and the clay-like slow conditions here in Paris suit his game well.

A first meeting between Marcos Giron and Diego Schwartzman is likely to be another lengthy tussle for both players with fairly similar playstyles built on hustle and determination. 29-year-old Schwartzman brings some excellent form through to the Paris Masters having reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his last four tournaments played, including finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the European Open. Taking him to win at least a set is the cautious option here after seeing Giron oust Tiafoe on Tuesday but a riskier alternative would be for this match to see a total of three sets between two players who never know that they are beaten.
