THE PREDICTION

World number nine Jannik Sinner received a bye to the second round at the Paris Masters as the eighth seed here but he has drawn a terribly tough first opponent in Carlos Alcaraz. 20-year-old Sinner has won four more ATP titles this season to add to his first won last year as 2020’s wunderkind. The Italian is in pole position alongside Casper Ruud to snatch one of the two remaining ATP Finals spots but this will be a true test of his credentials against a youngster already outdoing his own achievements. 18-year-old Alcaraz won his first ATP title this year at the Umag Open but his run to the quarter-finals at the US Open, via a career-best victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, put him on the big map. The Spaniard also beat Matteo Berrettini last week in Vienna for another standout scalp but he was up against it over three sets with Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Tuesday before overcoming the Frenchman.

This is a must-watch first meeting between two youngsters set to enjoy quite the rivalry over the next decade of men’s tennis. World number nine Jannik Sinner has ATP Finals qualification to motivate him here on top of his desire not to lose to the teenage star chasing his rising star and likely to overtake it to the top of the game one day sooner than later. The slow conditions probably suit the more balanced style of the Italian and he has to be favoured to edge this as the eighth seed but it would not be a surprise to see Alcaraz garner the majority of the crowd’s backing and use it. Sinner has occasionally blinked in moments like this, including last week in the semi-finals against Frances Tiafoe, so taking Alcaraz to win at least a set looks a shrewd move.
